It was June and the salmon were jumping.

So was the rumor that had been spread by Dan’s uncle and extended family in Powell, River B.C. on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. A trip we had talked about taking for at least a year. I had also heard of the monsters that run beneath the surface and tall tales of limiting out in mere hours. Having never been to Powell River or even been salmon fishing before I had few expectations other than those that already exist for trips to Canada or trips that include fishing as the main pastime: A road trip, plenty of beer consumption, a beautiful place and exploring what I often forget is another country.

After a beautiful, albeit accidental detour through downtown Vancouver we made it to the first of two gargantuan floating parks Canadians consider ‘ferries’ and shelled out what seemed like a bit much for an hour ride up the coast. But the last thing on my mind was an $84 ferry ticket (one-way) as we plugged along a gorgeous, rugged coast line dotted by ships, tug boats and light fishing vessels. The suns rays streaking in shades of blue as it rose over the mountains that seemed to shoot up out of the water. This really was the Sunshine Coast and it seemed comical to be making such a seemingly romantic weekend getaway, with my best friend, going to meet his family. Sorry ladies he’s taken. And not by me.
